Taking the Exam at Home Can Be a Pain! Here's What to Expect if You Decide to Take a PSI Test at Your Home or Office

Taking a licensing exam from home sounds convenient. No travel, no waiting rooms, and you can test in your own space. But if you’re planning to take a PSI test at home or your office, be ready for some challenges. The process is not always as smooth as it seems. I’ve had 2 recent students in the Study Center go through it, and I want to share what you can expect so you’re prepared and can focus on passing your California insurance exam.

What Is a PSI Test and Why Take It at Home?

PSI is the company that administers insurance licensing exams in California. They offer the option to take your test remotely, which means you can do it from your home or office instead of going in to one of their testing centers or taking the exam at one of the testing centers at a state-run facility for the Dept of Insurance. This option became popular during the pandemic and remains available for many exams.

Taking the test at home can save time and reduce stress from travel. But it also means you have to meet strict rules and technical requirements. PSI uses live proctors and software to monitor you during the exam. This ensures the test is fair and secure.

If you’re considering this option, it’s important to understand the setup, rules, and what might go wrong. That way, you can avoid surprises and focus on your test.

Setting Up Your Space for the PSI Test

Before your exam day, PSI will send you detailed instructions on how to prepare your testing space. Here are the key points you need to know:

  • Quiet, Private Room: You must be alone in a quiet room with no interruptions. No one else can enter or be visible during the test.

  • Clear Desk or Table: Your workspace should be clean and free of papers, books, phones, or other devices. Only your computer and allowed materials can be on the desk.

  • Good Lighting: The proctor needs to see you clearly through your webcam. Make sure your face is well lit and visible.

  • No Headphones or Earbuds: You cannot use any audio devices during the test.

  • Computer Requirements: PSI requires a desktop or laptop with a webcam, microphone, and reliable internet. Tablets and phones are not allowed.

PSI provides a system test link so you can check your computer and internet before exam day. I recommend doing this at least a day before to fix any issues.

One of the students trying to take the test at our Study Center had checked to make sure the computer was meeting the minimum requirements and still had issues. It's a good idea to use the 30 mins prior to your test to get in and setup so you're not stressed out if/when something goes wrong.

What Happens During the PSI Remote Exam

On exam day, you’ll log in to the PSI testing platform up to 30 mins prior to your scheduled time.

  • Prior to testing you will install the PSI Bridge software: This app will disable all other open applications and programs on your system - Chrome, One Drive, MS Edge, any other processes that are open on your system will be closed by the PSI Software. Once you have passed the systems check and thier app verifies no other apps are open, you will be connected to your test proctor.

A live proctor will connect with you through your webcam and microphone. Here’s what to expect:

  • ID Verification: You’ll show your government-issued ID to the camera. The proctor will check your identity. Have your ID ready, you don't want to be caught off guard and go searching for your ID.

  • Room Scan: You’ll be asked to slowly pan your webcam around the room to show your testing area. This ensures no unauthorized materials or people are present. The proctor may ask to look under your desk, behind your monitor, check your phone's screen and watch where you put your phone. You cannot have water or a drink with you. The proctor may do a more thorough check of your surroundings via phone images or having you move your webcam around for additional inspections. One student mentioned looking at jewelry on her wrists!

While it seems like overkill, the proctor is trying to ensure there is no cheating.

  • Rules Review: The proctor will remind you of the exam rules and answer any questions.

  • Start the Test: Once everything is confirmed, you’ll begin your exam.

During the test, the proctor watches you closely. Any suspicious behavior, like looking away too often or leaving the seat, can cause the test to be paused or ended. The software also monitors your computer activity to prevent cheating.

DO NOT look around the room, read questions aloud, or stand up from your desk. These rules will be reviewed with you. It's best to pretend like you are at a formal testing center while taking the test and potential distractions can result in an instant-fail on your exam.

Common Challenges When Taking PSI Tests at Home

Taking a PSI test remotely is not always easy. Here are some common issues I’ve seen or experienced:

  • Technical Problems: Internet drops, webcam glitches, or software crashes can interrupt your test. PSI allows some time to reconnect, but repeated issues may force you to reschedule.

  • Distractions: Pets, family members, or phone notifications can break your focus. You must stay fully engaged and avoid any interruptions.

  • Strict Rules: The proctors are very strict. Even small mistakes like looking off-screen for too long or having a phone nearby can cause problems.

  • Nervousness: Being watched live can increase anxiety. It feels different from taking a test in a center.

To reduce these risks, prepare your space carefully, test your equipment, and practice staying focused for the exam length.

  • Do a Full System Check: Use PSI’s system test link to check your computer, webcam, microphone, and internet speed.

  • Choose Your Room Wisely: Pick a quiet room with a door you can close. Inform others not to disturb you.

  • Clear Your Desk: Remove all papers, phones, and other items except what’s allowed.

  • Dress Comfortably but Neatly: You’ll be on camera, so avoid hats or sunglasses.

  • Have Your ID Ready: Keep your government-issued ID close for quick verification.

  • Stay Calm and Focused: Remember the proctor is there to help, not to catch you out.

  • Avoid Eating or Drinking: These are not allowed during the test.

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

If you face technical issues or interruptions during your PSI test, here’s what you can do:

  • Contact PSI Support Immediately: They can help you reconnect or reschedule if needed.

  • Document the Issue: Take screenshots or notes about what happened.

  • Stay Calm: Panicking can make things worse. Take deep breaths and follow instructions.

Remember, PSI understands that problems happen. They usually offer options to retake or reschedule if the issue was not your fault.

You will need to wait 24 hours before you can reach out to them for a rescheduled exam if you didn't pass or missed the exam for any reason. If you had and issue and missed your test window, it's best to have a ticket with PSI Support opened so they can investigate. If there were techinical issues, you can call PSI Tech Support and they can attempt to help get your computer test-ready.
