Getting your California insurance license can feel overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. The good news is the process is straightforward if you follow the right steps in the right order.

1. Choose the right license type
Decide if you want to sell Property & Casualty, Life & Health, or both. Each license type has its own required hours and exam. [Link to P&C Prelicensing] and [Link to Life & Health Prelicensing] to see what’s included in each.
2. Complete the required prelicensing education
California requires 40–52 hours of approved prelicensing courses depending on the license. These must be completed before you can schedule your exam. Check out our offerings here.
3. Schedule and take your state exam
Once you’ve finished your hours, you’ll register for the exam through PSI. Bring proper ID, arrive early, and be ready for a mix of multiple-choice questions across key topics.
4. Submit your license application
After passing, apply through the California Department of Insurance’s online portal. You’ll also need fingerprinting and a background check.
